Common Lash Mistakes & How to Fix Them

No matter where you are in your lash journey, mistakes happen.

Whether you’re newly qualified or years into the industry, refining your technique is what takes your work from good to exceptional. The key isn’t avoiding mistakes altogether, it’s recognising them, correcting them, and continuously improving.

Why Lash Mistakes Matter...

Small mistakes can have a big impact on your results. They can affect:

  • Retention
  • Lash health
  • Client comfort
  • The overall finish of your set

The good news? Most common lash mistakes are easy to fix once you’re aware of them.

Poor Isolation

One of the most common and most serious mistakes to make. When multiple natural lashes are stuck together, it can cause discomfort, damage, and poor retention.

Fix it:

  • Slow down your application
  • Isolate fully before placing each lash
  • Continuously check for stickies throughout the set

Using the Wrong Lash Diameter

Using lashes that are too heavy for the natural lash can lead to damage and premature shedding.

Fix it:

  • Assess the client’s natural lash health
  • Choose appropriate diameters (e.g. 0.03–0.07 depending on the set)
  • Avoid overloading the natural lash

Poor Lash Mapping

Skipping or rushing your mapping can leave your set looking uneven or unbalanced.

Fix it:

  • Always map before you start
  • Check symmetry between both eyes
  • Follow your sections

Too Much (or Too Little) Adhesive

Adhesive control is crucial for both retention and appearance.

Fix it:

  • Aim for a small, clean bead
  • Dip consistently
  • Refresh your adhesive regularly

Incorrect Placement

Placement affects both comfort and longevity.

Common issues:

  • Too far from the lash line → poor retention
  • Too close → irritation

Fix it:

  • Aim for approximately 0.5–1mm from the lash line
  • Ensure proper direction and alignment

Rushing the Set

Speed should never come at the cost of quality.

Rushing often leads to:

  • Poor isolation
  • Messy placement
  • Inconsistent styling

Fix it:

  • Focus on technique first
  • Build speed over time
  • Prioritise quality in every set
